Natalie contacted us recently to make us aware of a charity raising money for the Black Dog Institute, which requires her to give up her voice for 24 hours.
This charity helps to raise awareness about mood disorders especially depression and bipolar disorder .The challenge takes place on October 10 (world mental health day)
Below is a brief description of why she doing it…
I undertook this challenge last year after the loss of my cousin Tom, and found it to be a very challenging experience. After the novelty of using a white board wore away, I started to feel really isolated. As I couldn’t talk back to people, people stopped trying to talk to me and I found myself feeling really lonely. It was then that I realised that though I could start speaking again at any time if I wanted to, there are so many people, and young people especially who feel trapped like this all the time.
I cannot help each individual person suffering from mental health issues, but this year I have decided again to donate my voice on World Mental Health Day October 10 2013 to turn up the volume on the issue of mental health. I will be silent in solidarity with people suffering silently with mental illness and I will take this opportunity to have some quiet time out myself. If me shutting up and raising money for the Black Dog Institute can help even one more person from suffering in silence and ending their lives, then this is more than worth it.
