Today is a very special day, it’s a day that we stop and realise that depression and anxiety do not have to rule our life and that it’s time to reach out. For those of you wondering what I’m talking about, today in National ‘R U OK?’ day . The non for profit organisation ‘R U Ok?’ was founded with the sole purpose of making people aware that when life gets hard, as it often does, it doesn’t have to be done alone and there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Depression isn’t an emotion that discriminates, whether you are young, old, rich, beautiful, homeless, male or female it can hit at any time and choose to stay for a lifetime.
People often describe depression as this embodied companion that never leaves their side, like an unwanted visitor that just hangs around at every occasion, spoiling every moment. It’s a joy thief, a zapper of energy and drive and sometimes can even take over your will to live. For those who are going through or have been a victim of depression, you will understand or have experienced the extreme emotional lows that sometimes you just can’t control. It’s like a cage over your mind that hinders you from seeing a future or feeling emotions of peace and happiness.
But the good news is, you weren’t born just to exist or even survive, you were born to thrive! Take a moment and talk to someone, reach out for help or start a conversation that helps someone else. We were not created to be lonely or do our hardships alone, support is waiting for you and so is breakthrough. If you are suffering from depression or know someone who is then head to my Charities and Services page and click on the Beyond Blue link for professional advice and counselling.
But let’s all play a role in today and ask someone who we know ( or even a random!) “ R U Ok….no R U really OK? “
After all a problem shared is a problem halved .
